What is extradition law
The Hong Kong government came in the month of February with a proposal to amend the existing extradition law. In Taiwan, a person allegedly returned to Hong Kong after killing his girlfriend. Only then was the proposal of amendment to this law brought.
Hong Kong is an autonomous island of China and China considers it a part of its sovereign state. Hong Kong is not an extradition treaty with Taiwan, because of this, it is difficult to send the man to Taiwan for the murder case.
This law will allow China to extradite suspects from areas where Hong Kong is not in agreement.
In Hong Kong, there is a common law system of British time and it has an extradition treaty with more than a dozen countries. These include the USA, UK, and Singapore
Why is this disputed?
When Hong Kong was handed over to China in 1997, Beijing guaranteed the independence of people and maintenance of its legal system for at least 2047 under the concept of 'a country-two system'.
After the 'umbrella movement' lasted for 79 days in Hong Kong in 2014, the Chinese government started taking action against those who supported democracy. There was no agreement with China during this movement.
The people involved in protests were put in jail. A party supporting the independence was banned and a foreign journalist was fired from interviewing that party's founder.
Why thousands of people are protesting in Hong Kong?
The people of Hong Kong are strongly opposing the proposal to amend the extradition law. They say that after this, the law of China will be applicable to the people of Hong Kong and people will be arrested arbitrarily and tortured.
Why is the government ignoring?
The government says that if these amendments are not passed at the earliest, then the security of Hong Kong people will be in danger and the city will become the basis of the perpetrators.
The government says that the new law will be applicable to those who commit serious crimes, under which there is a sentence of at least seven years. Before taking extradition action, it will also be seen whether the laws of Hong Kong and China are interpreted as a crime or not.
Apart from this, officials also say that the extradition process will not be adopted in cases related to the freedom to speak and perform.
Why not trust the government?
Over the past few years, people's confidence in Hong Kong's government has increased, that they are taking decisions by the influence of Beijing.

In addition to the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, the United States expressed deep concern over the proposed amendment and said that its citizens and occupational interests will have an adverse impact on them.
On Thursday, 70 non-governmental organizations, including Human Rights Watch, the Committee to Protect Journalists, Rainbow Action demanded the withdrawal of the proposals.
Will Beijing listen?
In 2003, there were demonstrations against the laws brought on national security. At that time China had to retreat. However, Beijing's hold is far stronger in Hong Kong.
After the demonstration in support of democracy in 2014, China's influence has increased worldwide. Its economy has been fast-paced.
Now what?
After the big performance on Sunday, the government has said that on June 12, he will present the proposals of amendment once again.
The government has taken an extraordinary step bypassing the bill committee, which is responsible for the investigation of the proposals.
